Naver, Naver Cloud, and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) have agreed to jointly develop a sovereign defense AI platform. KAI plans to apply the technology to unmanned aircraft platforms and AI-pilot development for future battlefield environments, including its next-generation air combat system.
The word sovereign is doing real work here: the partnership pairs Korea's largest domestic cloud and foundation-model capability with its flagship airframer, keeping training data, models, and deployment inside national infrastructure.
The pattern mirrors moves elsewhere — defense establishments increasingly treat AI capability as strategic infrastructure that cannot depend on foreign model providers, especially for autonomy in contested environments.
