Korea's biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies are on track for a potentially record year in licensing: a series of multibillion-dollar agreements lifted first-half out-licensing contract value to nearly ₩13 trillion (US$8.5bn).

The licensing model has become Korean biotech's export engine — discovery and early clinical work done domestically, with global pharma paying upfront fees, milestones, and royalties to carry assets through late-stage trials and commercialization. ADC platforms, obesity assets, and immunology have led the recent wave.

Headline contract values deserve care: totals are dominated by biobucks — contingent milestones that pay only on success — with upfront cash typically a small fraction. Even so, the trajectory of upfront payments has been rising, the more honest signal of asset quality.
